The dance-fitness shoe fit checklist

Fit decides comfort and safety more than any spec. Run these eight checks before you commit — most fit problems show up right here.

  1. 01

    Test late in the day

Feet swell up to half a size by evening — the size that fits at 6pm is the size that fits mid-class.

  2. 02

Thumb of room at the toe

Leave about a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end. Dance pushes the foot forward on every step.

  3. 03

    Check width, not just length

The ball of your foot should sit at the widest part of the shoe with no pressure on the sides. If it spills, you need a wider width — not a longer shoe.

  4. 04

    Do the pivot test

On a hard floor, plant the ball of one foot and turn. A good dance shoe releases; a running shoe grabs and twists your knee.

  5. 05

    Heel lock

Your heel should stay put when you rise onto the balls of your feet. Slippage means a poor fit or a lacing tweak needed.

  6. 06

    Bend where your foot bends

The shoe should flex at the ball of the foot, not the arch. A shoe that bends in the middle offers no support.

  7. 07

    Wear your class socks

Try shoes on with the socks you actually dance in — thickness changes the fit.

  8. 08

    Give it the impact test

Do a few bounces in the shop. You should feel cushioned, not jarred, and stable, not wobbly.
